Lesson 4.1: Introduction to High-Temperature Materials

🎯 Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners will be able to:

  • Identify key high-performance polymers used in high-temperature 3D printing.

  • Describe the fundamental properties of materials such as PEEK, PEI, and ULTEM.

  • Understand the typical applications and challenges associated with printing these materials.

🌟 Overview

High-temperature 3D printing enables the fabrication of parts capable of withstanding extreme environments, such as aerospace, automotive, and medical applications. Materials like PEEK, PEI (commercially known as ULTEM), and other high-performance thermoplastics combine exceptional mechanical strength, chemical resistance, and thermal stability. This lesson introduces these materials, highlighting their unique properties and suitability for demanding additive manufacturing tasks.

🧪 Key High-Temperature Materials

  • PEEK (Polyether Ether Ketone)
A semi-crystalline polymer known for outstanding chemical resistance, mechanical strength, and thermal stability (melting point ~343°C). PEEK parts can operate continuously at temperatures up to 250°C, making them ideal for aerospace and medical implants.

  • PEI (Polyetherimide) / ULTEM
An amorphous high-performance polymer with excellent flame resistance, mechanical properties, and dimensional stability. PEI/ULTEM is widely used in electrical and aerospace industries, with a heat deflection temperature around 217°C.

  • Other High-Performance Polymers
Including PPSU (Polyphenylsulfone), PEKK (Polyetherketoneketone), and PAEK family polymers, each offering specific advantages in strength, processability, or chemical resistance.
