Lesson 5.5: Post-Processing in Selective Laser Sintering (SLS)

🎯 Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners will be able to:

  • Describe key post-processing steps required after SLS printing.

  • Understand techniques for powder removal and part cleaning.

  • Explain surface finishing methods to improve aesthetics and performance.

🧹 1. Powder Removal and Cleaning

After printing, SLS parts are embedded in loose, unsintered powder which must be removed:

  • Depowdering: Manual or automated brushing, air blasting, or bead blasting is used to clear powder from complex geometries and internal cavities.

  • Powder Recycling: Unfused powder is collected, sieved, and recycled for future prints to reduce waste and cost.

Proper cleaning is critical to avoid powder contamination and ensure dimensional accuracy.

🛠️ 2. Surface Finishing Techniques

SLS parts have a naturally grainy, matte surface due to the powder particles. Common finishing methods include:

  • Mechanical Finishing: Sanding, tumbling, or bead blasting smooth surfaces and remove powder residue.

  • Chemical Smoothing: Vapor polishing or solvent baths can slightly melt the surface for a smoother finish (more common for polymers).

  • Coatings and Painting: Applying sealants, primers, or paints enhances appearance and can improve part durability and chemical resistance.

♻️ 3. Additional Treatments

  • Infiltration: Filling porous parts with resins or waxes to improve strength, surface smoothness, or waterproofing.

  • Dyeing and Coloring: Parts can be dyed to achieve a variety of colors, improving visual appeal without adding weight.

  • Thermal or UV Curing: Some materials or coatings require post-curing to reach full mechanical properties.
